ETFE and Tensile Fabric

IMG_9513.JPG

Despite ETFE and tensile PTFE fabric being relatively new cladding materials, they have gained popularity and familiarity since their introduction into our built environments at the turn of the 21st Century.

ETFE (ethylene tetrafluoroethylene) is a lightweight heat resistant film originally developed in the 1970s for aerospace applications.  It is manufactured into pneumatic panels (or cushions) which are continuously inflated to provide an extremely lightweight canopy solution with excellent thermal and acoustic insulation.  Its first largescale architectural implementation was at the Eden Project in South-East England where it was employed to encapsulate an artificial tropical habitat.

In contrast, tensile fabric has been in our toolkit for millennia.  Animal skins and woven fabrics were used to clad tent frames, to provide solar shading to Rome’s Colosseum, and to harness the power of wind enabling trade and exploration by sea.  PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) is merely the latest iteration of tensile fabric technology, made famous by structures such as the Millennium Dome in London.

The use of these materials is not limited to largescale architectural projects.  Wherever loading constraints are a factor, tensile fabrics can provide a solution.  It is even possible to blend the two materials into one installation, owing to the similarity in their supporting structures.  In addition to their high performing structural capabilities, tensile fabrics add a unique texture and form to any building.

Height Sures' technicians have decades of experience with ETFE and tensile fabric structures.  We have a proven track record in:

  • Consultation and design

  • Installation and commission of new structures

  • Retrofitting and adapting existing structures to new specifications

  • Replacing damaged panels

  • Refurbishment of supporting structures, gaskets, and air machines

  • Inspection, repair and cleaning schedules, ensuring optimal performance and longevity
